Well Water Safety 2026: Why UV Filtration is the "Final Barrier" Your Victoria Home Needs
If you live on a well in Victoria, you know the freedom of having your own water source. But that freedom comes with a major responsibility: safety. Unlike city water, well water isn't treated with chlorine, meaning a heavy rainstorm or a seasonal shift can introduce bacteria like E. coli into your taps overnight. At Praise Plumbing, we recommend Ultraviolet (UV) filtration as the ultimate, chemical-free "bodyguard" for your well water.

How UV Works: Nature’s Disinfectant
UV filtration doesn't add anything to your water. Instead, it uses a high-intensity ultraviolet lamp to "scramble" the DNA of microorganisms.
• The Result: Bacteria, viruses, and protozoa (like Giardia and Cryptosporidium) become unable to reproduce, making them harmless to your family.
• Chemical-Free: You get 99.99% disinfection without the smell or taste of chlorine.
The "Pre-Filtration" Rule: UV Needs a Clear Path
UV light is powerful, but it can’t kill what it can’t see. If your water is cloudy or has minerals, bacteria can "hide" behind the particles (this is called shadowing).
• Step 1 (Sediment Filter): We always install a 5-micron sediment filter before the UV light to remove silt and rust.
• Step 2 (Iron/Hardness): If your well has high iron or hardness, we may need a softener or iron filter. If minerals coat the UV's glass sleeve, the light can't get through to do its job.
Yearly Maintenance: The 9,000-Hour Rule
A UV system is low-maintenance, but it isn't "set and forget."
• Annual Lamp Swap: UV lamps have a lifespan of about 9,000 hours (one year). Even if the bulb is still glowing blue, it may no longer be emitting the correct wavelength to kill bacteria.
• Quartz Sleeve Cleaning: The glass tube that houses the lamp must be kept crystal clear. We clean or replace this during your annual service to ensure maximum light penetration.
