1. The Vinegar Soak: Restoring Faucet Flow

If your kitchen faucet is spraying sideways or has lost pressure, it's likely just sediment from the city lines.

-The Fix: Unscrew the aerator (the little mesh screen at the tip). If it's stuck, wrap a rag around it and use pliers gently. Soak the parts in white vinegar for 30 minutes, scrub with an old toothbrush, and rinse. You can also pick up an aerator removal tool from a hardware store or Amazon.

-Why it works: It dissolves the calcium and chlorine buildup common in the CRD.

2. The Dye Test: Finding Silent Toilet Leaks

A running toilet can waste hundreds of liters of water a day, often without making a sound.

-The Fix: Put a few drops of food coloring into the toilet tank (don't flush!). Wait 15 minutes. If the color seeps into the bowl, your "flapper" is leaking.

-Why it works: It's the easiest way to catch a leak before your next water bill arrives.

3. The Mesh Strainer: The Ultimate Clog Prevention

The best way to fix a clog is to never have one.

-The Fix: Buy $5 stainless steel mesh strainers or a fun one from Canadian Tire or Amazon for every sink and tub in your house that is applicable.

-Why it works: It catches hair, soap scum, and food scraps before they enter your P-trap. In Victoria's older homes with narrow drain lines, this is a lifesaver.

4. The "Natural" Drain Refresh

Avoid chemical "liquid plumbers or Draino"—they eat away at your old Victoria pipes.

-The Fix: Once a month, pour half a cup of baking soda followed by half a cup of vinegar down your kitchen sink. Let it fizz for 10 minutes, then flush with a kettle of boiling water.

-Why it works: It breaks down light grease and soap buildup without the use of harsh acids. that can create a larger bill for pipe repairs.

5. The Main Shut-off Drill

Knowing where your water starts is the most important DIY skill you can have.

-The Fix: Locate your main water shut-off valve (usually in the crawlspace or near the water heater often at the front of the house where the water main enters the building). Give it a quarter-turn to ensure it isn't seized, then turn it back, if it leaks give us a call and we will replace it right away!

-Why it works: If a pipe bursts at 3:00 AM, you need to know exactly where to go to shut the water off to protect your home from water damage.
